To the average Muslim, they would undoubtedly say yes, the Quran is authentic. But when you analyze the facts, certain questions arise that challenges this claim. Let's take a look.
To the Muslim world, the Quran is the word of God/Allah. They will go as far as saying that it is the final revelation to mankind, sent to the whole world by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). They teach that it is holy and untampered with, unlike the bible of the Christians and Jews. There is even a Muslim scholar named Jamal Badawi who says, "Is is however, the only holy book which remained intact from the time of its revelation until the present time."
This is an interesting claim when it is known throughout the present day Quran didn't exist during the time of the Prophet Muhammad. The Quran wasn't complied into one book until after the Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) death. So the Muhammad has never confirmed if the present day Qur'an was right and exact.
Look at this fact. It is well known that the first chapter revealed to the Prophet Muhammad was chapter 96, Sura al A'laq, The Clot. Why is it 96? This is obviously innovation. Are you saying that the way the Quran came from Allah was incorrect? Couldn't Allah reveal Sura Al A'laq as the 96th revelation to Muhammad instead of first?
If you look up pictures of the oldest Quran, you will notice that the Arabic letters have no dots or dashes above or below the letters. In Arabic these are called vowels. If you pick up the Quran today you will see vowels. Again this is innovation, not original.
Do Muslims have an original Quran? All scholars will tell you no. the oldest copy of the Quran wasn't compiled until 19 years after the Prophet Muhammad died. 19 years!!! Are you serious? In today's age of modern technology, something that happened 1993 would be a challenge to preserve it's original state without some type of recording. We are to believe that in 651 A.D, after Muhammad died in 632 A.D., the Quran was memorized exactly the way the Prophet Muhammad receive it without the aid of any recording devices? No video tapes, photographs, carbon copies, xerox copies, nothing!!! That's hard to believe.
If you look at the facts, it is hard to say that the Quran in its present form is authentic. The original copy had no vowels. One dot in Arabic can change the meaning of a word. It can literally change an N into a B. Of course this can change a word entirely thus changing the meaning of what the Quran is intended to say. So you have to trust that first, the oldest copy is authentic. Second, you have to trust that the persons who added the vowels added them in the right places. That puts much faith in man, not in Allah.
Is the Qur'an authentic? You be the judge. Study for yourself. The truth is out there.
